SLEEP STUDIES
Sleep study is a multiparametric test used in the study of sleep pattern, a comprehensive recording of the biophysical changes that occur during sleep and as a diagnostic tool in sleep medicine. It is also known as polysomnography.
Those affected by sleep disorders:
Most sufferers are unaware
Detected by bed partner who witnesses symptoms
Excessive daytime sleepiness and falling asleep spontaneously but not at appropriate times
Restless sleep
Loud, disruptive snoring
Depressive moods
Forgetfulness
Irritability
Have trouble concentrating
Indications for sleep study:

1Epsworth sleepiness scale: >10

2Obstructive Sleep Apneoa (OSA)

3Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB)
- Snoring
- Upper airway resistance syndrome
- Hypopnea syndrome – shallow breathing while sleeping

1H/O Sleep deprivation > 1 month

2Abrupt awakening while sleeping

3Enuresis (Bed wetting)

4Bradyarrhythmia evaluation (while sleeping)
Procedure:

1It is usually performed at night

2Epsworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) can be measured

3Upper airway passage examination to be assessed
-
4Psychiatric conditioned to be ruled out

5Preparing the measurement and attaching the sensors to the patient can be done in the institution
-
6Various sensors used:
- Thermistor for determining nasal/ oral flow
- Thoracic effort sensor with belt measures chest wall movement
- Abdominal effort sensor with belt measures abdominal wall movement
- Finger clip (SpO2 sensor) for the measurement of oxygen saturation, pulse
- Cuff with activity sensor measures body movement
