Awareness And Support For Organ Donation- Successful Kidney Transplant Surgery

In 2012, a woman from Tirunelveli gave birth to her second child. Soon after, she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, which eventually led to the loss of both her kidneys. In a courageous act of love, her mother donated one of her own kidneys to save her daughter’s life. Unfortunately, the transplant was immediately rejected by the patient’s body.

Determined to survive, she registered with the Tamil Nadu Government Cadaver Organ Donation Portal and began dialysis at Dr. Jeyasekharan Medical Trust, Nagercoil, clinging to the hope of a second chance at life.
That hope turned into reality on 18th May 2024, when a 27-year-old woman at Velammal Medical College Hospital, Madurai, tragically passed away due to an intracranial hemorrhage. Her family’s decision to donate her organs became a turning point in our patient’s life

As our patient was first on the waiting list, the donor’s kidney was allotted to her.
A specialized medical team from Dr. Jeyasekharan Medical Trust immediately rushed to Madurai to retrieve the organ. An urgent message was forwarded to the Police Department stating that the transplant must be completed within 5 hours to ensure the kidney’s viability. Recognizing the urgency, the Tamil Nadu Police Department swiftly arranged a Green Corridor, enabling the kidney to be transported from Madurai to Nagercoil in just 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Thanks to this seamless coordination and rapid response, the transplant surgery was successfully performed under the leadership of Urologist Dr. Devaprasath Jeyasekharan, with the support of Urology: Dr. Deepak David Nephrology: Dr. Ninoo George Anesthesia: Dr. Nishal Perumal, Dr. Anand Karthick Vascular Surgery: Dr. Collins Ephreme Noble A.
The patient is now recovering well and is expected to be discharged soon.

This powerful incident is a moving reminder of the life-changing impact of organ donation. One selfless act can breathe new life into another’s world.
