Overview

The department has occupied a special place in the hospital ever since the first dialysis in the district was done here in 1987. Kanyakumari district along with other parts of southern Tamil Nadu has a high prevalence of chronic renal disease and dialysis has become an integral part of management of many of these patients. The department also has facilities for diagnostic investigations including renal biopsies, peritoneal and haemodialysis and also has a licence to perform renal transplantation. The heamodialysis unit currently has 10 HD machines and does approximately 500 dialysis per month.

Dr Jeyasekharan Medical Trust Hospital has a full-fledged Nephrology department with State of the Art Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Renal Replacement Technologies.
The department, under the guidance of Nephrologist, Dr. Ninoo George, MD Medicine (AIIMS), DM Nephrology (CMC Vellore) is capable of performing all forms of diagnostic and therapeutic renal techniques, some of which were pioneered for the first time in Kanyakumari district.

Renal Therapeutics - Glomerular diseases, auto-immune diseases, Diabetic kidney disease, all forms of nephropathy
Preventive renal services – Master Health Check-up, Diabetic camps, Renal camps
Education – BSc Dialysis course under the aegis of Dr MGR Medical University

The department in its present capacity is catering to hundreds of dialysis patients and thousands of kidney disease patients from the neighbouring 3 districts, through daily OPD and 24/7 emergency services.
